Is this a family-oriented gym?
Absolutely! We are happy to say we are extremely family friendly and are proud of all the families that have become friends from it. We have Children, Women-only, and a 35 and up class all at the same time to make sure families get time in at the gym together!
Does Drysdale Jiu-Jitsu teach self-defense?
Yes! While all martial arts provide self-defense through its own practice, we also provide a Women’s Self-Defense free seminar every other month as well as a Kid’s Anti-bullying seminar! We always want to make sure everything you learn in this gym can be applicable to real life situations requiring self-defense.
Is it mandatory to compete?
Not at all. Every person has their own reasons for joining Drysdale Jiu-Jitsu and we will always respect that. While this is a Jiu-Jitsu Academy, we want to make sure the pressure is off. Just have fun!
WIll my confidence improve?
It will soar! When learning a new skill set, it not only disciplines you, but empower you! This blends into your confidence on how you walk, talk, and think. Martial arts are a great way to improve your overall confidence.
Does the gym have a good culture/atmosphere?
One of the areas Drysdale BJJ thrive on is gym culture and atmosphere. We believe all ego’s should be left at the door and everyone should feel welcomed. No one in the gym should intimidate, pressure, aim to hurt, or disrespect anyone, new member or seasoned. Drysdale and his staff will correct any wrong doing that takes place. We believe in creating lasting friendships and accept no hostile personalities or character traits.
Is this gym for women?
100% yes!! We not only have a Women’s Only class every Monday and Wednesday but approximately a third of our students are women. We have a growing group of Jiu-Jitsu ladies and we make sure everyone is welcome, comfortable, and cared for.
Are you open on the weekends?
We are open on Saturday for a Kid’s 9am Jiu-Jitsu class and an Adult 9am Jiu-Jitsu class. We also have a wrestling program on Saturday at 4pm and Sunday at 6pm. Please call 702-258-0048 for more information! Here is a link to our schedule!
Do I need prior experience to train?
Not at all! We provide a 15 Day-Lesson Plan for a specialized introduction course for everyone new to Jiu-Jitsu. You should feel no pressure at all and be able to ask any question, with zero judgement. When you are ready to join our regular beginners class, we will support you!
I haven’t practiced any sport or been to the gym in years, can I train?
We always want to make sure you consult with a doctor if you have any concerns. Our 15-Day Lesson Plan and Begginners course are specially designed for people with no previous experience in any sport . We’d love your first day back in the fitness world to be with us!
What should I wear to my first class?
First and foremost, we want you and everyone around you to be comfortable! With that, we recommend for men and boys: board shorts with a garment underneath, and a t-shirt. For women and girls: leggings and t-shirt. It’s best if everyone wears sandals for quick access to get on and off the mat. Please make sure your nails are trimmed and you have showered before hand. Here are a few pointers for before attending class.
Do you have showers?
Yes! We want to make sure Drysdale Jiu-Jitsu fits in everyone’s schedule. You will need to bring your own toiletries.
What is the hygiene in the gym like?
We are very proud of our cleaning schedule! Drysdale BJJ uses hospital grade cleaning products and disinfectant on the mats twice a day, every day. We continuously educate our students and staff about personal and gym hygiene to ensure we limit any possible issue.
WIll I get injured?
Although we cannot guarantee nothing will happen, we have one of the lowest injury rates in Las Vegas and make sure our instructors are teaching safely, correctly, and paying attention to any out of conduct play. Since we are a team, no one should be intentionally trying to hurt anyone else.
Will I have fun?
We can guarantee it! You will be learning a new skill set, working out, and meeting new lifelong friends! We don’t know of many gyms that can do that! Our gym is friendly, welcoming, and passionate about our students enjoying their time together.
How hard are the classes?
We separate our classes to keep the intensity properly balanced. Our 15-Day Lesson Plan is not demanding at all, while our beginner’s class is a moderate course. Lastly, our competition class is intermediate to hard, depending on your rank. We split up our children’s class to light, moderate, and intermediate. No matter what we want to make sure you let us know the pace you are comfortable with.
Do I need to bring any equipment?
When coming in for a trial class it is not necessary, however, like all other sports, you will want to have the proper equipment to enjoy the class fully. If you are interested in our striking class, we’d recommend gloves and shin guards. If you are attending a Jiu-Jitsu class, a gi would be ideal to bring with you. We do have rentals available, but cannot guarantee they will be here for you. At any rate, you can just wear your own clothes until you are ready to purchase our gear.
What is Zenith BJJ?
Great question! Zenith BJJ is our competition team that Drysdale Jiu-Jitsu represents when attending any match or competition. This team is co-owned by Robert Drysdale himself. You will need to register through IBJJF.com and our front desk team would love to help you. It’s amazing knowing you have a world wide team to support you!
How often does Drysdale teach?
Professor Drysdale teaches every weekday at 6:30pm, unless traveling for an out of state seminar. Please come and take a class with him!
What’s the student/teacher ratio for kids and adults?
Our children’s program consists of an average of one instructor for every 5-8 kids. Coach Drysdale and Coach Rafael teach their classes themselves and assistant coaches will take lead on any student in our 15 day lesson programs.
What are the age limits?
We start at age 4 with no age cap. Talk to your doctor and listen to you body!
Will I lose weight?
Your body is going to change! You are about to get stronger and use muscles you never knew you had. This can absolutely result in weight loss as well as muscle gain. Jiu-Jitsu can definitely be added to anyone’s weight loss routine.
